Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of the Philosophy of Holistic Life Balance in the Mahosadha jataka” has the following objectives: 1) to study the concept of life balance from a holistic perspective; 2) to examine the Mahosadha jataka within the framework of Theravada Buddhist philosophy; and 3)to analyze the philosophy of holistic life balance as presented in the Mahosadha jataka. This study is qualitative research employing documentary research methods. The primary sources include the Tipitaka (Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya Edition, B.E. 2539 [1996]) and other related academic texts. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis.

          The research results revealed that:

          1) Holistic Perspective on Life Balance: Life balance from a holistic perspective does not refer to allocating equal amounts of time to each aspect of life. Rather, it involves viewing life as an integrated whole in which all dimensions are interconnected and mutually influential. Human beings are therefore understood as complex systems composed of multiple interrelated dimensions that function in coordination and cannot be meaningfully examined in isolation.

          2) Mahosadha Pandita in Theravada Buddhism: Mahosadha Pandita is presented as a Bodhisatta in a former life, appearing in the Mahosadha Jataka or the Maha-Ummagga Jataka, which is the fifth story among the Ten Great Jatakas in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. His mode of thinking is distinguished by exceptional wisdom and broad vision. He resolves problems through a systematic and analytical process that includes comprehensive situational analysis, differentiation of key components, identification of causal relationships, collection of relevant information, and step-by-step decision-making carried out effectively.

          3) The Philosophy of Holistic Life Balance in the Mahosadha Jataka: The Mahosadha Jataka illustrates a balanced way of life through the integration of wisdom and compassion, as well as reason and the human heart, without falling into extremes of either intellectualism or action alone. His approach to life accords with the principle of the Middle Way (Majjhima Patipada). Consequently, Mahosadha’s self-development is holistic, encompassing the cultivation of wisdom through interdisciplinary learning, the development of the mind and emotions through mindfulness practice and self-regulation, the maintenance of physical health, and the enhancement of social skills.
