YOUNG BUDDHIST ART : TRANSMISSION AND DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS FOR YOUNG BUDDHIST ART IN PHRAE PROVINCE

Abstract

The objectives of this study were, 1) to examine the process and skill transfer model of young Buddhist art craftsmen (Sala) in Phrae Province; 2) to transfer and develop the skills of young Buddhist art craftsmen in Phrae Province; and 3) to disseminate the knowledge of young Buddhist art craftsmen in Phrae Province to the public. This qualitative research was conducted using a Research and Development (R&D) and Action Research approach. The population and sample included a group of master craftsmen and artisans, a group of young craftsmen, and relevant organizations or agencies, with a total of 35 individuals. The research instruments used were focus group discussions, workshops, and knowledge extraction and problem analysis to determine the development direction of the process and skill transfer model for young Buddhist art craftsmen.


The research findings revealed that


1. The research findings revealed that the process of transmitting and developing skills in young Buddhist art artisans in Phrae Province employed a systems approach, synthesizing input factors, processes, output, control, and feedback.


2.Through the training of young novice craftsmen in Buddhist art, it was found that most participants gained a good understanding and proficiency in the skills of Buddhist craftsmen. Some still lacked certain skills but were able to complete the tasks, albeit requiring further development of their skills and concentration during practical work, as well as more consistent practice time. As a result of this skill transfer and development, valuable intellectual works of Buddhist art were produced, including Thammasat, Busabok, Tungkradand, and carved wooden Buddha images.


3.The research team organized a Buddhist art forum to present research findings to the community. They invited individuals, organizations, and the general public to attend a lecture on the various processes involved in transmitting traditional Buddhist art skills in Phrae Province. Approximately 50 people participated in the event. The forum facilitated a knowledge-sharing session to explore strategies for developing Buddhist art skills, starting with identifying the root causes of the issues and working towards solutions at both the individual and community levels of Buddhist art in Phrae Province. The organizations that have utilized the research findings include Bowonvijjalai School in Rong Fong Subdistrict, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Province; Tung Kwaw Temple in Tung Kwaw Subdistrict, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Province; and Yang Noi Temple in Ko Ae Subdistrict, Khueng Nai District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. Additionally, Wat Rong Fong and Bowonvijjalai School have developed a learning center for traditional Buddhist arts, serving as a resource for the public and various organizations. The research project's activities have been incorporated into training programs to transfer knowledge to target groups and interested individuals.
