Refusal Strategies in Suggestions by Chinese Learners of Thai: An Interlanguage Pragmatic Study

Abstract
This article aims at studying the strategies used to refuse suggestions by Chinese learners of Thai, which are compared with these used by native Thai speakers and native Chinese speakers. The results show that the top 3 refusal strategies used by Chinese learners of Thai are the reasoning strategy, the gratitude strategy and the direct refusal strategy. While native Thai speakers prefer to use the reasoning strategy, which is followed by alternative strategy and gratitude strategy respectively. For native Chinese speakers, the reasoning strategy is preferred, which is followed by gratitude strategy and the direct refusal strategy equally. Alternative strategy comes third. In terms of strategy combinations, it is found that Chinese learners of Thai are more inclined to use multiple combinations of strategies than native Thai speakers and native Chinese speakers.
