Good Governance of School Administrators in a Disruptive World

Abstract

Amid the current intensification of social, economic, and environmental volatility,
basic education institutions have a critical role in delivering education to develop high-quality human resources in a disruptive world. This academic article synthesizes literature to acquire knowledge about the principles of good governance for school administrators in a disruptive world and the development of good governance practices for them. The study found that school administrators must adapt to the challenges of the VUCA World, characterized by volatility (V), uncertainty (U), complexity (C), and ambiguity (A), as well as the educational phenomena emerging in the BANI World, defined by brittleness (B), anxiety (A), nonlinearity (N), and incomprehensibility (I). To address these challenges, school administrators should apply principles of good governance, which include the rule of law, morality, transparency and accountability, participation, responsibility, and cost-effectiveness. Educational authorities should support the development of good governance among school administrators in the disruptive world through a four-step process: 1) diagnosing the need for good governance development among school administrators, 2) designing a framework for the development of good governance for school administrators, 3) implementing the development plan to enhance good governance, and 4) evaluating the outcomes of good governance development for school administrators. This process ensures that school administrators uphold the principles of good governance and possess the competencies required to manage the complexities of school administration effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
