English Article Reading Comprehension Skills Development by Using English Article Reading Exercises through SQ4R Teaching Method

Abstract

The purposes of the study were to 1) investigate the efficiency of English article reading exercises for comprehension by SQ4R teaching method, 2) develop students’ comprehensive reading achievement by using English article reading exercises for comprehension through SQ4R teaching method, and 3) investigate students’ satisfaction on English reading comprehension skills development by using English article reading exercises for comprehension and SQ4R teaching method. 100 students from Phranakhon Rajabhat University were selected by cluster random sampling. The research instruments comprised
1) 8 lesson plans based on SQ4R teaching method, 2) 8 different English article reading exercise sets, 3) 30 items English reading achievement test, pre-test and post-test, and 4) students’ satisfaction survey on English reading comprehension skills development by SQ4R teaching method. Quantitative data were analysed by efficiency (E1/ E2), percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired-sampled t tests. The findings showed 1) the efficiency of process and product of the comprehensive reading exercise sets was 80.67/ 81.70, which met the criteria at the level of 80/80. 2) students’ achievement on comprehensive English article reading by SQ4R teaching method has the average post-test score at 24.51. It was higher than the criteria at the statistical significance of .05. 3) The overall students’ satisfaction on English reading development by SQ4R teaching method had mean 4.12. This was rated in a high level.
