Idea of Using Pets to Enhance Library Services A Case Study of Pridi Banomyong Library

Abstract

In ancient times, libraries in foreign countries stationed cats to manage rat populations. Nowadays, library cats serve as an attraction, drawing users to these spaces. For instance, Thailand's Pridi Banomyong Library (Thammasat University Tha Prachan) called "Numnim" representing the library by engaging with users and promoting its image. This innovative concept is unprecedented among higher education institution libraries in Thailand due to the absence of pet-friendly policies. The presence of cats has become a phenomenon, attracting visitors who come specifically to interact with these feline representatives, inadvertently serving as brand ambassadors for the libraries. However, this service has limitations, such as specific areas designated for reading with cats. Services might resume only after the cats have rested sufficiently. Additionally, consideration must be given to individuals with pet allergies.
