Main Article Content
Abstract
People in southern provinces of thailand are encountering life and family problems. This research aimed to examine the needs and propose an integrated approach for developing the life and family subject for tertiary students based on the cultural context of southern border provinces of thailand. The data were collected from three sources. First, documents, including the curriculum, the pedagogical context, and relevant studies were reviewed and documented. After that, the content analysis was undertaken. Second, a focus group discussion was conducted with 30 fourth-year students. They were divided into five groups of six people, purposively selected. A focus group discussion form was used to record the data. Subsequently, the content analysis was conducted. Third, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 15 experts selected with the snowball sampling method. The data were analyzed with the content analysis method. After the synthesis of the three groups of data, this study revealed two findings. First, the needs for developing the subject were categorized into four aspects. First, the learning objectives should aim to establish students’ good understanding, skills, and positive attitudes toward health, which should fit the multicultural nature of the local context. Second, in the aspect of the pedagogical method, the students should be given opportunities to get hands-on practice in a participation-oriented manner. Third, the media and learning sources should be mixed and integrated between in-classroom and out-of-classroom based on the cultural context. Lastly, the assessment should cover all aspects of the objectives and pedagogical method. For another thing, regarding the development approach for this subject, the course should be designed with the learning objectives, content, activities, media, learning sources, and assessment that suit the context of local communities and that the knowledge in life and family health be integrated into the multicultural cultural context in southern border provinces.
