Instruction for Promoting Argumentation Skill in Science Classroom

Abstract
Argumentation skill is the ability to construct, support, oppose, or adjust the claim for generating an acceptable body of knowledge. Argumentation skill requires the cooperation between the empirical evidence from the investigation or experimentation and the justification for combining the claim with the evidence. Promoting students’ argumentation skill in science classroom will lead the student to be a scientifically literate person. Furthermore, it can develop students’ higher order thinking skills, science process skills, understanding the nature of science, communication skill, and the ability in assessing the reliability of the data and evidence which are the main goals in science learning in the present time. Instructional way to promote students’ argumentation skill in science is starting from building the learning situation for generating the argumentation aspect. Then ask probing questions to arouse students’ logical thinking in order to compile and connect the evidences that they get from the learning situation with the claim. Next, use the generating claim to argue with other difference students’ claims. Finally, write the correct conclusion of the argumentation aspect that is mutually acceptable from both sides of the disputant.
