The Prevalence and Associated Factors of Depression among Older People with Chronic Diseases in Wang Noi District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province

Abstract

The study was a cross-sectional analytical study aimed to investigate the prevalence of depression and the associated factors among older people with chronic in Wong Noi District, Phra Nakorn Si Ayutthaya Province.The samples consisted 206 of older people with chronic diseases who were lived in Wong Noi District, Phra Nakorn Si Ayutthaya Province.The subjects were recruited by convenience sampling. Data were collected by interview between May to December 2016. The data were collected using a structural interview consisted of 6 Parts:1.)The questionnaire for demographic data, 2.) Thai Mental State Examination, 3.) Perceived Severity of Illness Assessment 4.) Barthel Activities of Daily Living Index, 5.) Family Relationship Evaluation and 6.) Thai Geriatric Depression Scale. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The result revealed that the prevalence of depression in older people with chronic diseases was 8.0, of which 7.5% had mild depression. Factors which remained significantly related with depression in older people with chronic diseases were impaired functional ability (OR= 4.89, 95% CI= 1.99-8.33, p= 0.006), perceived severity of illness (OR= 1.09, 95% CI= 1.04-1.15, p= 0.001), sufficiency of income (OR= 6.58, 95% CI= 1.60-16.80, p= 0.014) and number of co-morbidity (OR= 2.15, 95% CI= 1.10-4.25, p= 0.030) The finding suggest that the public health staff should focus on crucial factors including functional ability, perceived severity of illness, sufficiency of income, number of co-morbidity and lead to planning and control depression in order to reduce depressive symptoms and better quality of life.
