Abstract

This research aimed to development of context-based learning guideline in the topic probability of grade 10th students, and study the 10th grade students' mathematical connection skills on the topic of probability who learned through context-based learning. The populations were 40 students of a large secondary school, in Sukhothai Province, in second semester of the 2019 academic year. The research used the classroom action research comprising 3 spirals, and the instruments included a set of lesson plans, learning sheets, reflective journals, and mathematical connection skills test. Data analyze were used to percentage statistics, content analysis, and data creditability by method triangulation were used to identify the findings. The results revealed that the context-based learning approach, composed of 4 steps: 1) Setting a local event, 2) Doing tasks, 3) Learning key concepts, and 4) Applying in new context. Furthermore, teachers focused use of problematic situations that students had been familiar with, questions to stimulate students' interest in learning activities, group discussion to support student’ problem solving, and motivation for students’ effective participations in the activities. In addition, this research found that the students appeared to have development of the connection skills, which has developed of percentages at level 3 from operation spirals 1st to operation spirals 3rd. They illustrated the relationship between a mathematical concept and another, mathematics and other subjects, and mathematics and daily life respectively.
