The Construction of Statistical Literacy Norms of 9th graders in Three Southernmost Provinces

Abstract

The statistical literacy of students in the three southernmost provinces still needs to be developed. Therefore, this research was studied statistical literacy scores, compared the basic statistics of statistical literacy scores and construction of statistical literacy norms. The multi-stage random sampling was used and data was collected with 200 of 9th graders of the schools under the jurisdiction of secondary educational service area office 15. The research instrument was a statistical literacy test item. Data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, one-way analysis of variance and the normalized T score. The research finding revealed that; The overall average score of statistical literacy of the 9th graders was 13.86 (±4.02). When considered separately in each aspect revealed that the literacy, statistical knowledge, mathematical knowledge, context knowledge and critical skills with an average score of 3.39 (±0.84), 3.87 (±1.62), 3.19 (±1.08), 1.50 (±1.25) and 1.19 (±1.08). There was non-significant difference of statistical literacy scores classified by province. Considering in each aspect, the research finding revealed that the context knowledge and critical skill were statistically significant different at the .05 level. The norms of statistical literacy scores of the sample group as a whole, there is a score range from T23 to T70 (P4.80 - P95.20). Based on their findings, it will be important information for teachers in designing learning activities in statistics part for students to develop their critical skills further.
