The Development of Community-Based Instructional Model to Promote the Competence on Local Curriculum Development for Student Teachers
Main Article Content
Abstract
The promotion of competence on local curriculum development for student teachers should have a proper instructional model. Therefore, this was a research and a development whose objectives were to 1) develop the community-based instructional model in the curriculum development for student teachers and 2) compare the competence on local curriculum development before and after using the community-based instructional model. The samples consisted of five experts who were selected by purposive sampling and 30 students majoring in Social Studies who were selected by multi-stage sampling. The instruments used in this research were 1) a draft of the community-based instructional model, 2) the model appropriateness-evaluating form, 3) the lesson plans to promote the competence on local curriculum development according to the model, and 4) a form measuring the competence on local curriculum development. The data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, and t-test for dependent samples. The research results were found as follows. 1. In general, the appropriateness of developing the community-based instructional model to promote the competence on curriculum development for student teachers was at a high level. 2. The results of comparing the competence on local curriculum development before and after using the community-based instructional model were found that the learners’ scores of the competence on local curriculum development after using the model were statistically significantly higher than those of the competence before using the model at .01 level. These results can be explained that the developed instructional model has used the key principles, that is, learning is knowledge reconstruction based on previous experiences and learning is a self-directed process and a social process. Therefore, using community to be learning resources and to support learning of learners- allowing learners to have direct experiences- is appropriate for promoting the competence on local curriculum development for student teachers.
