Abstract

Herbs are alternatives for health care and disease prevention. They are available both in forms of drugs and dietary supplements. Many kinds of plants have been used in Thai traditional medicine since ancient time, many of them are consumed as a food and provide great nutritional value. Herbs are easy to find, affordable, safe and have only few side effects. This research is a qualitative study that aims to study the need for herbal utilization of people in Singhanakhon district, Songkhla province from the past, at present and in the future. Data are collected through in-depth interviews. The open-ended questions are structured to guide the interview and allow the interviewees to speak freely. The key group interview consisted of 15 individuals and the interview content is analyzed in a descriptive manner. During the period from February to October 2021, the study found that in the past majority people in the region needed to use herbal medicines to treat diseases, for detoxification, as a cosmetics, as food supplements and as a food which accounted for 100 percent. At present, the need for consumption as a food accounted for 80 percent which decreased from the past. This is because today's society is advanced with the development of modern technologies and complete facilities, causing people's consumption behavior to change. In the future, it was found that people are expected to have higher demand to consume herbs as a food and beverage because there is a popular herb consumption trend as an alternative for health care. Findings from this research can be used as information for the government, private sector and local people to realize the importance of herbal utilization in the future.
