Preservation of Thai Culture Based on Buddhism

Abstract

This article aims to examine different aspects of Thai culture originated from Buddhism and maintenance of Thai culture.


          Buddhism as a major basis of Thai culture has been firmly established on this soil for more than 2200 years since ancient kingdoms to until the present date; originating and being the source of Thai culture in many respects. For instance, present Thai language is substantially influenced by Pali and Sanskrit. Classic Thai literatures including Tri Phum Phra Ruang, Phramahachanok etc. can be traced back to Buddhist scriptures. Buddhism also involves important traditions and rituals such as Songkran Day, Loi Krathong Day, giving alms to a Buddhist monk, making merit on seasonal festival, giving sermon on the story of the last incarnation of the Buddha etc. In addition, number of public holidays are dedicated to Buddhist holy day such as Makha Puja Day, Visakha Puja Day, Asalha Puja Day, Buddhist Lent and End of
Buddhist Lent etc. Arts are inspired by and in turn, serve religious purpose in many aspects e.g. construction of Jedi and Stupa as well as monasteries with wall painting depicting stories from Buddhism and the Lord Buddha. Monastery also plays significant role as a source and the forum for arts and music in the community especially when there is an auspicious ceremony or misfortune. Many popular Thai country songs are influenced by Buddhism. With well-blended belief in soul, superstition, astrology, spirits and angels etc., Thai culture has developed its uniqueness and outstanding identity. The key question is how to maintain Thai culture upon embracing the AEC and global community
