Mobile Phone Usage Behavior of Students Studying in Social Studies Program of Thepsatri Rajabhat Universit

Abstract

The main objectives of this research are: i) to study the behavior of students using mobile phones in Social Studies Program of Thepsatri Rajabhat University, and ii) to study the effects of using the mobile phone towards students and social impact. The population of this research consisted of 160 first, second and third students studying in Social Studies Program, academic year 2/2018. The survey research method was carried out in this study. The research instrument was a questionnaire created by the researcher with reliability value equal to 0.7887. Statistical techniques used were frequencies, percentage, mean average (μ), and standard deviation (S.D).

The findings of this study were concluded as follows:
1) The most popular mobile phone of social studies students is iPhone (31.8 %), followed by Samsung (25.6 %), Oppo (15.7 %), Vivo (12.5 %) and Huawei (11.3 %), respectively. Students spent the evening hours after class to use mobile phones, which is the highest in number, followed by using the phone since waking up (16.3%). They spent more than 4 hours using mobile phones. When picking up the phone, the first application they do was Facebook (26.2%), followed by Line (18.8%), YouTube (15.7%) and Instagram (10.7%) respectively.
2) Regarding student mobile phone usage behavior, it was found that the top 4 most popular behaviors of students were using a mobile phone to connect to the internet (μ= 4.58) , using mobile phones to play social networks such as Facebook, line, twitter, Instagram, etc. (μ= 4.55), using the application to make free calls with boy or girl friends (μ = 4.52) and using a mobile phone to take pictures and shooting video clips (μ= 4.50), respectively.
3) The impact of using mobile phones revealed that students had no time to read and review the textbooks (μ = 3.49) and their costs of living had increased (μ = 2.54).
