A Synthesis of the Middle Way in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy for using as the Business Ethics

Abstract

This article is part of a dissertation entitled “A Synthesis of the Middle Way in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy for using as the Business Ethics” has three objectives: 1) to analyze Utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill Ethics using as the Business Ethics 2) to analyze Middle Way in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy using as the Business Ethics 3) to synthesize of the Middle Way in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy for using as the Business Ethics. This is a documentary research. The research was found that Utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill Ethics concept lays considerably great emphasis on achievement of maximum Profits for Business owner but negligent the Actor and Action as for the Middle Way in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy lays considerably great emphasis on Actor, Action and Achievement. For the needs in the achievement in business is to facilitate human development through 3 stages, these are material comfort and security, mental well-being and inner freedom. For the result from the synthesize of Utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill Ethics concept and the Middle Way in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy for using as the Business Ethics is Model 3R consist of 1) Right Actor : meant those who run business with Intelligence and consisting of well-intentioned 2)Right Action : meant those who run business with good skills and morality and 3) Right Commitment : meant those who run business with commitment in achievement for the benefit of everyone.
