Gaddamer's Hermeneutics in Medical Assistance in Dying for Mentally Illness Patients

Abstract
The purpose of this academic article is to study the interpretation of the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) law for mentally ill patients in Canada through the framework of Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutics. The focus is on the analysis of the "prejudice" and "fusion of horizons" of those who support and those who oppose the extension of the MAiD law to cover mentally ill patients.
The different interpretations are not solely based on medical or psychiatric facts, but are also the result of cultural context, ethics, beliefs about the dignity of life, and fears of inappropriate use of the right to die.
