The Characteristics of Great Pandit

Abstract

          The term “Pandit” is from Pali word “Pantita”. It means “one who lives with wisdom”. This word is opposite to “Pan” or “Pala” or “Palo” which means “the fool”, one who lives with dullness. In general, value and importance of “Pandit” are evaluated by the degree or the certificate which will guarantee the graduate’s qualification in applying for a job. The wisdom here is the ways people get their four requisites. In the other hands, when we come to describe the word “Pandit” in terms of dhamma, it has got much deeper meaning. This is to say, it means “wisdom” not only in secular aspect but also in religious one. One should not be trapped in passion.

          The objective of this research is to study and describe the characteristics of good “Pandit” and other aspects which are related to “Pandit” such as moral, knowledge, idea, communication and academic societies. Moreover, it shows the way “Pandit” should follow, study and be accepted in academic societies.
