Abstract

This research aims to 1) develop and evaluate the effectiveness index of a reading comprehension enhancement curriculum using the 6-step ladder technique combined with reflective thinking for 9th-grade students, and 2) examine the impact of this curriculum on 9th-grade students. The research sample consists of 30 students from class 3/2 in the second semester of the 2023 academic year at Sermngam Witthayakhom School, under the jurisdiction of the Lamphun Secondary Educational Service Area Office. The sample was selected using Cluster Random Sampling. The research instruments include 1) a reading comprehension enhancement curriculum using the 6-step ladder technique combined with reflective thinking for 9th-grade students, 2) curriculum support documents, and 3) a reading comprehension assessment test for 9th-grade students. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including percentage, mean, standard deviation, relative development percentage, and dependent sample t-test.

The research findings revealed that:

  • The development and determination of the effectiveness index for the reading

comprehension enhancement curriculum using the 6-step ladder technique combined with reflective thinking for 9th-grade students consists of seven main components: 1) The background and significance of the curriculum, 2) The principles of the curriculum, 3) The objectives of the curriculum, 4) The structure and content of the curriculum, which includes two learning units: Unit 1, "Reading for Value Creation," and Unit 2, "Enhancing Wisdom through Knowledge," 5) The teaching management of the curriculum, 6) The media and learning resources of the curriculum, and 7) The assessment and evaluation of the curriculum. The overall appropriateness of the curriculum, as evaluated, showed the highest average score, while the appropriateness of the curriculum's supporting documents also received the highest average score. The effectiveness index of the curriculum was found to be 0.6163.

2) The results of implementing the reading literacy enhancement curriculum utilizing the 6-Step Ladder Technique in conjunction with reflection for Grade 9 students revealed that the students' overall relative progress scores were at a high level, accounting for 62.69%. Furthermore, their post-test scores were significantly higher than their pre-test scores at a statistical significance level of .05.
