Abstract

Research Objectives were to; 1) study rice varieties and cultural practices related to rice in Lampang Province. 2) develop a management process for rice seed production within the Loomnumchang communities. 3) establish an innovative model for culturally rooted rice and seed production in Mae Tha District, Lampang Province. This study employed a mixed-methods research design. Research tools included in-depth interviews with three groups of informants ; a general group of 29 informants, a group of 28 informants involved in the development of rice seed production systems, and a key informant group of 24 individuals contributing to the creation of an organic rice seed production model. Data were analyzed using content analysis and a model-building process to develop innovations in rice and seed production aligned with local cultural contexts.

The research Findings revealed that;

  • The culturally significant rice seeds in Lampang Province were characterized by: 1.1)

Local rice varieties and rice-related cultural practices symbolizing abundance and reflecting community beliefs and identities 1.2) Traditional rice production processes, such as the use of natural compost and rainwater, which contribute to the conservation of indigenous rice varieties and the promotion of sustainable agriculture 1.3) Factors influencing rice production include climate, soil conditions, water sources, the application of technology, and governmental support

  1. 2. The Community-Based Rice Seed Production Management Process consists of five stages: 2.1) The Survey and Collection of Rice Varieties Process– This involves identifying and collecting suitable rice varieties that are resistant to diseases and pests, while also promoting community participation in rice production. 2.2) The Variety Selection and Seed Preparation Process– This includes the selection and sorting of seeds, along with germination testing to ensure seed viability. 2.3) The Seed Production Process – This involves the management and care of rice seeds to maintain quality, as well as harvesting at the optimal time. 2.4) The Seed Quality Testing Process – This includes germination tests, seed cleaning, sorting, treatment to improve germination rates, and prevention of contamination or infection. 2.5) The Seed Packaging and Storage Process – This step ensures that seeds are stored in appropriate temperature-controlled environments to prevent contamination and maintain quality.

  2. 3. The Development of Innovative Models for Rice and Seed Production comprises: 3.1) Cultural Organic Rice Farming Innovation– This model emphasizes the conservation and revitalization of local wisdom by selecting appropriate rice varieties, promoting sustainable farming practices, and developing networks and markets for organic rice. 3.2) Socio-Cultural Organic Rice Farming Innovation– This focuses on engaging communities through activities and government support to strengthen relationships and enhance organic rice production within communities. 3.3) Economic and Health-Oriented Organic Rice Farming Innovation – This aims to produce nutritionally valuable organic rice, add economic value, and raise awareness of its benefits through local media and online platforms.
