DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE LANNA BUDDHIST ARTS FROM CERAMICS, KHO KHA DISTRICT, LAMPANG PROVINCE

Abstract
This research aimed to: (1) analyze the ceramic art forms within the community context of Ban Sala Meng, Tha Pha Subdistrict, Ko Kha District, Lampang Province; (2) develop and creatively produce Lanna Buddhist art through ceramic innovation; and (3) evaluate innovative ceramics integrating Lanna Buddhist aesthetics for social dissemination. The study employed a research and development approach within a practice-based creative arts framework. A participatory qualitative methodology was adopted, integrating knowledge of Lanna Buddhist art, traditional ceramic craftsmanship, and contemporary materials science. Eighteen key informants participated in prototype development and aesthetic and functional evaluation.
The findings revealed that: (1) Ban Sala Meng ceramics exhibited a distinctive Lanna identity inspired by architectural elements of the pagoda at Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, particularly the lotus base, spire, bell-shaped structure, and stucco ornamentation, reflecting the integration of local wisdom and Buddhist art; (2) the innovation process comprised prototype analysis, conceptual design based on the principle of “creative conservation,” material and technical experimentation, prototype production, and refinement. Clay-body formulation, gold-luster glazing, and double firing were applied to improve structural integrity and surface quality, resulting in a ceramic pagoda prototype with aesthetic, symbolic, and functional value; and (3) experts and target users reported a high level of satisfaction (mean = 4.65/5). The prototype effectively conveyed Lanna Buddhist artistic values and religious beliefs and demonstrated potential for further development as a contemporary cultural product supporting the creative economy, tourism, and community-based cultural learning at local and national levels.
