Synergistic Collaboration to Enhance Access to Basic Education for Cross-Border Migrant Children in the Chiang Rai Special Economic Zone: A Case Study of Baan Kru Nam Foundation in Chiang Saen

This study aims to examine the current situation, challenges, and approaches to strengthening cooperation for enhancing access to basic education among cross-border migrant children in the Chiang Rai Special Economic Zone. Using a qualitative research approach, this study adopts a case study of the Baan Kru Nam Foundation in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants selected via snowball sampling, including foundation administrators, community leaders, foundation advisors, and representatives from four educational institutions, totaling seven sources. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that cross-border migrant children gain access to education through multi-stakeholder collaboration involving the foundation, schools, government agencies, the private sector, and local communities. A flexible teaching approach, integrating both formal and non-formal education systems, plays a crucial role in facilitating access. However, significant challenges remain, including documentation issues, unclear legal status, and societal perceptions that view migrant children as burdens. To address these challenges, this study suggests policy reforms to improve the registration process for migrant children, the development of curricula that emphasize life skills and vocational training, and the promotion of stronger collaboration between schools, foundations, and communities. Additionally, raising awareness of migrant children's rights and establishing a sustainable support system are essential steps in empowering these children to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society and the economy in the future.
