Factors Related to Sustainable Food Consumption Behavior of Public University Students in Bangkok Metropolis

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to investigate: 1) knowledge and sustainable food consumption behavior, and 2) factors associated with sustainable food consumption behavior of public university students in Bangkok metropolis. A multistage random sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 400 university students. A questionnaire was use for data collection. Cronbach’s alpha reliability analysis was 0.78 and 0.71. Statistical analysis utilized percentage, mean, and Chi-square test. The findings revealed that nearly threefourths of the students were female. More than one-third of the students were over 20 years old. More than four-fifths of the students never studied on food and nutrition course. More than three-fifths of the students resided with their parents. More than two-fifths of their parents were business owners and Freelancer. Nearly half
of their parents’ education held a bachelor's degree. The students’ average income was 7,979 baht per month. Almost half of the students had 4 family members. More than two-thirds of the students received information on sustainable food consumption behavior from social media or websites. Almost three-fifths of the students had knowledge on sustainable food consumption behavior at a moderate level. More than threefourths of the students frequently performed sustainable food consumption behavior. The relationship between the students’ personal factors and sustainable food consumption behavior revealed that the students’ personal factors were not associated with sustainable food consumption behavior. The students’ information perception and knowledge on sustainable food consumption behavior were not associated with
sustainable food consumption behavior.
