Social Skill Development through Cooking Activities for Students with Autism: A Case Study of WatChantanaram School, Chanthaburi Province
The purposes of this study were to investigate the development of social skills among students with autism using cooking activities, and compare scores from the assessment of social skills before and after participating in cooking activities(Time Series Design). A sample of five students with autism at elementary level was used for the Quasi - Experiment research process. The study focused on three areas of social skills: communication skills, self-control and working with others. The instruments consisted of 10 lessons plans, social skill evaluation forms, journal and teacher interview forms. Data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
The results showed that cooking activities could developed social skills of students with autism. Communication with others was the most improved social skill. Results of observation, interview the classroom teacher and listen to students’ opinions revealed that students loved practical activities and cooking activities. In addition, students improved themselves on self – help, applying knowledge to real life, team working, living with others, responsibility, and creative thinking.
