Genealogy of English Development Discourse

Abstract

This article is a qualitative research employing Michel Foucault’s discourse analysis method. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the discursive practices of the development discourse which produces the myth of “English language development”. The myth, led by Western countries, instigated the belief that “English language development” is the way to improve people’s quality of life, oneself, and the nations. Thai state and her people have been trapped within the modernism’s curriculum development. Under the cover of the “English language development” discourse, the “underdeveloped English language” and “underdeveloped civilians, economy, and countries” are noticeably perceived. The genealogy method helps to to shake the readers from their sleep regarding English language development with some other clues hidden underneath
