Abstract

This study investigates the work motivation of Thai traditional medicine service providers. Occupational labor problems contribute to the operation and continuance of Thai traditional medicine business. Successful business partly depends on the motivation of the providers. Lacking of skilled providers as service personnel leads to significant problem of this study which aims to (1) examine aspects of working motivation of the personnel, and (2) find out the main obstacles in working of the personnel. This qualitative study used an in-depth interview, and 21 personnel who worked in the Thai traditional business firms in Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province who were informants. Data were saturated and analyzed and the results revealed that the personnel perceived cultural opportunity, and Thai wisdom as their extrinsic motivation. These generated sufficient income comparing to their low educational levels. Their intrinsic motivation came from being acceptance obtained from their clients as well as from the public resulting in their feeling of self-worth. Both motivation sources contributed to willingness to work, satisfaction, and be proud of their helping hands. Public image was the main obstacle of their career.  Further, this study found that the personnel had high work motivation level responding to high demand for their services. However, government sectors should subsidize the business in terms of promoting training, standardization of the service business, and considering practitioner regulations and professional ethics.
