Abstract

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the types of translation strategies and approaches used for translating novel “Angels and Demons”, written by Dan Brown (2000) and translated into Thai by Oradee Suwankomol (2004). The analysis was conducted using qualitative data through 20 outstanding samples. The researcher applied the principles of translation editing proposed by Sanchawi Saibua (2017) and Mona Baker (1992) as the analytical framework. In framework the findings were classified into two levels, which were the editing in the lexical level and the editing in syntactic level. The editing in the lexical level incorporated: 1) adding explanation 2) using phrases or sentence instead of word 3) using general words to replace specific ones 4) adding conjunction between the thinking 5) words or idioms deletion and 6) cultural substitution. The editing in syntactic level incorporated: 1) phonological level (transliteration) 2) lexical structure level 3) sentences structure level was classified into 4 methods: rearrangement of word order in sentence or phrase, sentence reduction into phrase and phrase expanding into sentence, modifying of negative sentence, and adding and deletion of word in sentence). The results indicated that in the lexical level, using phrases or sentences instead of words was most frequently used editing technique, followed by cultural substitution. For the syntactic level, the addition and deletion of words in sentences was the most frequently found, followed by the modification of lexical level structure. In addition, the literal translation techniques were mostly used in order to keep the meanings of the original version.
