Career Development for Elderly Group Informal Labours Chaiyaphum Province

Abstract

This research aimed to (1) study the context and occupational development needs of the elderly in Chaiyaphum Province and (2) propose appropriate guidelines for developing occupational potential among informal elderly workers in Chaiyaphum. A mixed-methods research design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires from 400 elderly individuals, while qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 50 key informants, including leaders of elderly clubs and representatives from each sub-district.

            The quantitative findings related to Objective 1 revealed that the majority of informal elderly workers were female (70.90%), aged between 61–69 years, with an education level below high school. Over 60% had a monthly income of less than 5,000 baht, primarily from self-employment and the government elderly allowance. Most respondents expressed a desire to increase their income and to develop their existing occupations. They preferred practical training formats, such as participation in occupational groups and hands-on workshops. Regarding barriers to occupational engagement, 57.60% reported physical health issues, 55.70% faced a lack of funding, and 50.60% lacked technological skills, indicating a strong need for support from relevant agencies.

          The qualitative findings related to Objective 2 suggested that suitable occupational development guidelines for informal elderly workers should adopt a holistic approach.                This includes hands-on training, the establishment of occupational networks, and multi-sectoral support from government and private organizations. Furthermore, it is recommended to promote skills that align with market demand, such as organic farming, food processing, online commerce, and traditional handicrafts. Encouraging group formation and the establishment of community enterprises can enhance access to markets and resources, enabling elderly individuals to live with dignity, earn sustainable incomes, and maintain self-reliance.
