Abstract

This paper analyzes, synthesizes, applies, and integrates bodies of knowledge to explain the phenomenal actions led by the public, private, and civil sectors in the three southern border provinces. These relevant parties employ the United Nations’ (UN) community development principles as their primary analytical strategy and the aims are to develop the southern border communities using concrete actions (i.e., projects, activities, action plans, and strategic plans). These developmental actions’ key targets are to provide economical, social, political, administrative, and environmental enhancement and transformation for the southern border area so that it can truly satisfy the local needs. The transformational and developmental actions include a way-of-life-based community development; community strengthening and problem-solving; an economic development through community-based strategic revenue generation; a natural-resource conservation by Community of Faith or “Kampung Taqwa”; a productivity enhancement and value addition for agricultural products; a holistic Halal industry development; role strengthening for community leaders, religious leaders, women, and youths; and an implementation of a royal concept, “understand, achieve, and develop.” These actions are executed to stimulate, foster, facilitate, and provide opportunities for the communities to maximize their human- and natural-resource utilization so that, in conjunction with the area’s geographical advantage, its communities can become truly developed and remain peaceful.
