Causal Factors Influencing Statistical Literacy of Undergraduate Students in Bangkok University

Abstract

This study aimed to examine a measurement model of statistical literacy and a causal factor influencing statistical literacy of the undergraduate students in Bangkok University. The sample of 357 undergraduate students in Bangkok University was selected by the technique of stratified random sampling. The data collection tool was the questionnaires on statistical literacy with the reliabilities of .85, and the test construction of causal factors on statistical literacy with the validity of .58. Data were analyzed by using Descriptive Statistics, Correlation Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Path Analysis. The findings showed that 1) the measurement model of statistical literacy fitted to the empirical data, whereas knowledge showed the highest loading, followed by disposition, and skill, respectively. 2) The causal model of statistical literacy of undergraduate students fitted to the empirical data. Three factors had positively significant effects on statistical literacy, at the .01 level. Experience in statistics showed the highest level of influence, followed by learning statistics by technology, and experience in research, respectively.
