Abstract

The objectives of this study were to 1) analyze the pathways by which people engage in drug-related offences and drug-related criminal offences, and 2) produce recommendations for preventing drug-related offences. In-depth interviews and purposeful sampling were used in this qualitative study. The sixteen key informants were prisoners at Nakhon Pathom Central Prison, as well as their relatives or close friends. The major findings revealed a common life pattern among the subjects, one that was characterized by upbringing in dysfunctional households, the presence of divorced or drug-using parents, and residence in areas where drug abuse is a problem.

A case study cannot escape punishment only because they were caught and punished the first time. There are those who commit crimes repeatedly who could struggle with finances or lack access to education. Inmates who take drugs are a group of persons who are having difficulty in their personal lives, which is why they choose to commit crimes.

Persuasion is the most important risk factor for delinquency, and youngsters who lack the security of having friends as a support system in their families are particularly susceptible to this issue. Even though they are aware that doing so is against the law, the majority of prisoners still plan to do it because they believe it will be advantageous in many aspects.

Currently, the law is not particularly oppressive and is quite weak. A strong mind, the ability to add value to oneself, knowing how to utilize leisure time productively, and the ability to perform honest job are the outcomes of studying preventive measures. Multiple parties with ties to the offenders should take joint action, and those who support them should band together to create a methodical action plan with which to actively take out the combined sources. Institutions inside the family must be able to communicate with one another, and they should impose harsher punishments for repeat offenders under these circumstances than under the Narcotics Act.
