AWARENESS-BUILDING BEHAVIORS IN THE USE OF PESTICIDES AMONG FARMERS IN THE JANG RIVER BASIN

Abstract
This research aimed to: (1) examine farmers’ awareness-oriented behaviors regarding pesticide use; (2) assess their awareness of pesticide use; and (3) propose a community participation approach for promoting Buddhist-based awareness-oriented pesticide-use behaviors among farmers in the Jang River Basin. A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating documentary, quantitative, qualitative, and action research. The sample comprised 390 farmers in Nakhrua Subdistrict, Mae Tha District, Lampang Province. Data were collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews with farmers and representatives of relevant agencies. The action research employed the A-I-C process (Appreciation, Influence, and Control). Quantitative data were analyzed using percentages, means, and standard deviations.
The findings revealed that: (1) farmers’ awareness-oriented behaviors regarding pesticide use were at a very high level across the pre-use, during-use, and post-use stages, with mean scores of 3.82, 3.43, and 3.44, respectively; (2) farmers’ overall awareness of pesticide use, encompassing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, was at a high level, with farmers demonstrating knowledge of pesticide hazards, positive attitudes toward safe and reduced pesticide use, and corresponding responsible practices; and (3) the community participation approach integrating the A-I-C process with the Four Foundations of Meditation effectively promoted awareness-oriented pesticide-use behaviors. Through Appreciation, Influence, and Control, farmers developed greater awareness of their practices, recognized impacts on health and the community, and translated knowledge into practical actions, such as producing compost to reduce chemical use. Integrated with the four dimensions of Buddhist development—physical, moral, mental, and wisdom development—the approach supported sustainable and responsible pesticide-use behaviors for the benefit of health, community, and the environment.
