Trends in Learning Activities that Focus on“Applications of Linear Equations with One Variable” Using Open Approach and Problem Solving Strategies

It is necessary that teachers must find out the learning management techniques to promote
the success of mathematics learning activities management. Teachers must enhance the students’ problem-solving ability with knowledge simultaneously by emphasizing on Open
Approach. This is to foster the students’ critical and creative thinking according to his or her own ability and content. The students particularly use of various mathematical patterns involved as tools in solving problems. Teachers attempt to provide learners’ experience with access to mathematical thinking in accordance with sufficient given learning activities. Teachers use open problems to promote students’ learning process. Both the activities of the students and their mathematical thinking must be carried out to the fullest extent. Students present their own problem solving method and share knowledge with their classmates to open to varied problem solving approaches and get better understanding.
When learners face the problem, they can choose and apply the suitable strategies to solve
the problem situation. The strategies, which can apply in problem solving, are guess and check strategy, work backwards strategy, make a table strategy, draw a picture strategy and equation strategy. This learning activity will develop students’ ability in mathematics problem solving.
