Keywords:
Needs Assessment, Teaching Computing ScienceAbstract
The purposes of this evaluation are as follows: 1) to survey the needs, 2) to analyze the causes of the needs and 3) to provide the guidelines for fixing the causes of the needs. The informants were 198 computing science teachers and seven stakeholders. The instruments were questionnaires. The data about the needs were analyzed with frequency, percentage, modified priority index (PNI modified) and matrix analysis. The causes and the guidelines were analyzed with the nominal group technique.
According to the evaluation results, it was found as follows. Firstly, the computing science teachers had the needs for the knowledge about using learning media and information technologies. was .624. By conducting the matrix analysis, it was found that the operations were incomplete. Improvements were needed. The causes was the lacks of the channels for gaining the knowledge about using the media. To fix the cause, the sources of online learning have to be gathered for the teachers to learn. Secondly, the computing science teachers needed to be able to analyze the learning standards by using the indicator in order to design learning activities.
was .511. After conducting the matrix analysis, it was found that the operations were incomplete. The improvements were needed. It was because the teachers could not analyze the learning standards with the indicator. To fix the cause, professional learning centers (PLCs) must be created in order to exchange the knowledge. Thirdly, the computing science teachers need to be able to conduct learning science activities with Scratch program, code.org website and Unplug activity without using computers and algorithm activities created by them.
was .753. By conducting the matrix analysis, it was found that the operations were incomplete. The improvements were needed. It was because the computing science teachers’ plans were not continuous. As a result, the teachers could not improve themselves regularly. To fix this cause, the schools have to clearly set long-term computing science policies. Fourthly, the computing science teachers must promote computing science.
was .939. After conducting the matrix analysis, it was found that the operations were incomplete. The improvements were needed. It was because the teachers did not improve themselves. To fix this cause, the number of online group channels must be increased in order to drive them to join trainings and to follow their training results. Fifthly, the computing science teachers needed to be able to promote information technology trainings.
was .803. By conducting the matrix analysis, it was found that the operations were incomplete. The improvements were needed. It was because the workshops did not cover all issues. To fix this cause, supports must be provided for budgeting the computing science workshops.
