Abstract

This qualitative research, employing a case study design, aimed to explore school administrators’ perceptions of their roles in implementing the Education Sandbox Policy in Thailand’s southern border provinces (i.e., Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat), which share similar cultural, social, religious, and educational contexts. This study collected data by interviewing 27 school administrators that were purposively selected and used a semi-structured interview protocol. The data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The findings revealed that school administrators perceived their six roles: (1) comprehending and interpreting policy into participatory practices, (2) coaching and empowering teachers continuously, (3) developing innovative management systems, (4) creating opportunities for students to reduce educational inequality, (5) fostering networks to mobilize resources, and (6) encouraging teachers’ reflective practices through the use of data and information. These findings provide a guiding framework for developing school administrators in education sandbox areas to be aware of and perform their school management roles consistent with the underlying intentions of Education Sandbox Policy.
