Abstract

The Importance of Engineering in Science Learning Management in the 21st Century

This article presents the concept of engineering and its relevance to science as well as the importance of integrating engineering into science learning management in the 21st Century. The meaning of engineering and engineering design used in basic education will be presented. Moreover, similarities and differences between science and engineering practices will also be pointed out. Both Science and Engineering practices are, in fact, very similar, however they have two different intents. First, science starts with asking a question while engineering starts with identifying a problem or need. Second, science develops explanation while engineering develops a solution. However, both practices still retain the importance of inquiry which is needed in solving a problem in order to construct artifacts or methods through engineering design. Integrating the concepts of engineering into science instruction can enhance science learning not only in content knowledge and practical skills, but also can enhance the application of science and how it is used in real life. More importantly, engineering design helps foster students’ essential skills in today’s world.
