Abstract

12th GradeStudents’ Global Awareness by Science, Technology and Society Approach

The research employed the Science, Technology and Society (STS) Approach on the topic of Petrochemistry that aimed to enhance the Global Awareness of the Grade 12 students.  Eighteen students in the Science and Technology program of a school in Chonburi province were purposively sampled for the study which were conducted in academic year of 2014.  The data was collected before and after the STS Approach learning activities using the Global Awareness Test.  The collected data was converted to Rubric Scores.  The average scores, the percentage, and the relative growth scores were determined and interpreted.  The teacher’s logs and the students’ journals after the learning activities were also gathered.  The information was analyzed by means of Content Analysis.  The results showed the use of STS Approach learning activities that assisted to increase in the Global Awareness of the Grade 12 students in every indicator.  Seventeen students obtained a higher score in their post-test than pre-test.  Fifteen students were ranked at a very good level in both aspects of study.  The design of STS Approach learning activities on the topic of Petrochemistry in order to enhance the global awareness consisted of the decision making for social campaigns, the collaborative problem solving, and the proposal for preventing/reducing the problems. The teaching methods employed in this research that were included students’ group discussions, question asking, information searching, conclusion findings and presenting, and group working.  This research is beneficial for the teachers who can apply this research as a guide line to enhance Global Awareness of the students into learning activities.
