Exploring Chinese language learning motivation of Southeast Asian students studying in China

บทคัดย่อ

This paper reports the results of a study investigating the features and individual differences in Chinese language learning motivation among 120 Southeast Asian students learning Chinese in China by adopting a quantitative approach. The results showed that Chinese language learning motivation among the participants was at a high level, and there were no significant differences in their Chinese language learning motivation in terms of gender and duration of Chinese learning. However, in terms of age, their Chinese language learning motivation was significantly different in ideal L2 self, which indicated that the ideal L2 self has a great impact on learning behavior. At the same time, individual difference factors will affect the distribution of motivation types of these international students in different dimensions. Because learners of different age groups have different levels of cognitive development, the construction of their ideal L2 self will be affected. Based on this, Chinese language teaching cannot adopt a single model but should adhere to the principle of teaching according to the actual situation of the learners, fully meet the diverse needs of the learners, and thus improve the pertinence and effectiveness of teaching.
