Language, Local History and Socio-Cultural Aspects : Reflection from Toponyms of Village Names in Satun Province

Abstract

          The purposes of this article were to study naming of a village in Satun province from Malay language (Bahasa Melayu), to study the relationship between the toponym and social-cultural context of villages in Satun Province and to investigate reflections of social and culture from the toponym village in Satun province to support teaching, with a total of 279 names. The study found that naming the toponyms of a village in Satun Province from  Malay language, Malay language is used to name nouns in various ways such as transliteration, translation, borrowing and consonant variation. The relationship between the toponyms and, cultural context of Satun village found that traces of local history of Satun in the village landscape including the important stories or events, important persons, groups or ethnicities, landmarks, locations and sizes of communities as well as important objects or objects related to the local history. In addition, the village’s toponyms reflects the social and cultural conditions in Satun Province, consisting of lifestyle, beliefs and values as well as relationships with beliefs of people in the community, the occurrence of community, the Natural phenomenon and various ethnic groups.
