Strategies for legitimizing King Tilokaraj. The study was based on the Chinnakalamalipakon as the primary document and they studied the local legends of Chiang Mai and the Khlong Yuan Phai as secondary documents. The study found that Phra Rattanapanyathera legitimized King Tilokaraj is ascension to the throne to avoid problems. The strategies used to legitimize King Tilokaraj included: 1) Legitimization through the invention of names; 2) Legitimization through the promotion of Buddhism; 3) Legitimization through filial piety;
4) Legitimization through the power of merit and virtue. The necessity to legitimize King Tilokaraj stemmed from his negative portrayal, as recorded in the Chiang Mai local legends and the Yuan Phai poem.
