Residential building design guidelines that reflect lifestyle and local architecture to promote ecotourism: A case study of homestay in the Halabala lake area to Betong District, Yala Province

Abstract

The research aimed to study the characteristics of local architecture that affect the hallmarks of Homestay, Yala Province, and respond to the needs of the users to propose a guideline to design residential buildings that reflect the lifestyle and local architecture of Yala province. Questionnaires were used as a tool to collect data from 108 tourists with simple sampling. Tourists were asked on architectural styles opinion that reflect Yala's identity and the personal preferences of tourists. The results showed that tourists had a corresponding perception between the local identity presentation and personal preferences of various building styles, various building materials and floor planning, except the ceiling pattern, the open-air ceiling pattern was ranked at the first place representing the uniqueness of Yala Province. Future study might focus on environment design, location and Homestay services model which will provide valuable understanding on the culture and local community way of life, in accordance with the goal of homestay tourism management in Yala Province.
