This article aimed to: 1) investigate the current status and needs of research competency among foreign language teachers at Guangxi University of Foreign Languages; 2) construct a research competency enhancement model; and 3) evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of the model. A mixed research approach was adopted, integrating quantitative and qualitative research. The theoretical framework is based on competency theory, Management Process Theory (POLC), and teacher professional development theory. Research tools included questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The research subjects were all foreign language teachers at Guangxi University of Foreign Languages (N=202). A questionnaire survey was conducted among all teachers, and in-depth interviews were conducted with administrators and teacher representatives through purposive sampling. Data analysis employed mean, standard deviation, modified Needs Priority Index (PNI), and content analysis. The study found a significant gap between the current status and expectations of foreign language teachers' research competency, with teachers showing a high need for improvement across the five core competency dimensions. Based on empirical research, the research competency enhancement model constructed in this study includes four core elements: guiding principles, target system, implementation path, and supporting conditions. The implementation path, based on POLC theory, includes four cyclical phases: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, systematically improving teachers' research capabilities. Expert evaluation results show that the model achieves a high level in terms of appropriateness and effectiveness, demonstrating significant practical application value. The finding indicates that the model possesses important theoretical and practical value, can systematically enhance the research competency of foreign language teachers, and can provide a valuable reference for similar applied undergraduate institutions.
