A STUDY OF VERB-OBJECT PAIRS IN A CHINESE TEXTBOOK FOR FOREIGNERS: A CASE STUDY OF NEW PRACTICAL CHINESE READER TEXTBOOK

The objective of this study was to investigate verb-object pairs in a Chinese textbook entitled ‘New Practical Chinese Reader.’ Data were gathered from chapter 1 to chapter 20 of the selected textbook. The results showed that the pairing between verb and patient object was found in the highest frequency. In addition, when comparing Thai and Chinese verb and object pairing, it was found that both languages shared some identical verb and object pairs, and there were also some verb and object pairs which existed only in either language. Based upon the results of the study, the researcher had also provided a teaching guideline for Thai teachers who need to teach and explain this topic to Thai learners.
