As a common construction in Chinese, “Adj+bu liao duoshao(A 不了多少)” is often used in comparative context. Its discourse mode is "N1 bi N2 Adj bu liao duoshao (N1 比 N2 A 不了多少)" , and its construction meaning is: "N1" is more than "N2" in some fields, but the degree of "Adj" is limited. According to the different relations between the comparison subjects, “Adj+bu liao duoshao” can realize the function of descriptive evaluation and exaggerated evaluation respectively. When using this construction to evaluate, the speaker can achieve the pragmatic effects of clear derogation, clear commendation, clear commendation, and clear agreement. In teaching Chinese as a foreign language, we should first clarify the source of the meaning of the “Adj+bu liao duoshao” construction through the "Chunk Chain" teaching method, explain the two pragmatic functions of the construction by category, and create situational contexts for students to highlight their pragmatic effects.
