EXPERIENCE IN BREAKING THROUGH THE THRESHOLD OF CHINESE CHARACTERS:A STUDY ON THE APPLICATION OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE CHARACTER TEACHING METHODS TO THE TCSOL

Chinese characters are an important part of international Chinese language teaching, yet they face the dilemma of being difficult to teach and learn as well as the dilemma of pedagogical innovation. The traditional Chinese character teaching method played a role as a source of teaching method in the early years of foreigners learning Chinese and is a vivid manifestation of the second language application of the native Chinese character teaching method. A study centred on folk Chinese character teaching materials (called Zazi by the ancients) shows that traditional folk Chinese character teaching is based on the cultivation of students' localised Chinese character application skills and pays close attention to the close integration with life. The teaching materials are written to emphasise the usefulness and interest of the content, avoiding the presentation of textual knowledge and its teaching and learning methods, giving teachers a great deal of autonomy and flexibility, while at the same time placing high demands on teachers' literacy and teaching ability. These aspects have certain reference significance for contemporary international Chinese character teaching.
