Development of Reading Ability of First-year Undergraduate Students at Institute of Physical Education on Yala Campus to Promote Analytical Thinking by Use of KWL Plus Technique in Thai Language for Higher Education Course

Abstract
This is experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. The research objectives were: 1) to compare pre and post-reading ability to promote analytical thinking of first-year students studying the Thai Language for Higher Education course by the use of KWL Plus technique and 2) to investigate satisfaction of the first-year students towards the teaching and learning management by the use of KWL Plus. The research samples were a class of 30 first-year undergraduate students of the Institute of Physical Education, Yala Campus. They enrolled in the Thai Language for Higher Education course in the second semester of academic year 2019. They were selected by cluster random sampling following a pre-experimental design plan, one group pretest-posttest design. The research instruments were: 1) KWL Plus learning management plan, 2) pre-and post-analytical reading ability test, and 3) a questionnaire investigating students' satisfaction towards KWL Plus teaching and learning activities.The statistics used for data analysis were mean, standard deviation (S.D.), percentage (%), dependent t-test, and content analysis.
The research findings revealed that: 1) the post-analytical reading ability of first-year students after receiving teaching and learning activities using KWL Plus was significantly higher than pre-ability at the significance level of .01. The average mean of the post-reading ability test of the students (=15.27, S.D=1.015) was higher than the average mean of pre-reading ability test (
=11.60, S.D=2.343). Most students' analytical thinking ability was content analysis skill (
=4.60, S.D.=.51) accounting for 65.70 percent. The second rank of skill that most students have was relationship analysis skill (
=2.70, S.D.=.50), which accounts for 54.00 percent. The last rank of skill that most students have was principle analytical skills (
=1.93, S.D.=.51) accounting for 48.30 percent, and 2) the students were satisfied with the development of reading ability to promote critical thinking with KWL Plus technique at a high level (
=4.12, S.D.=.59).
