Abstract

The basic guitar learning skill development kit has been shown to enhance learners’ guitar playing abilities. However, instructional materials specifically designed to develop basic fingerstyle guitar techniques remain limited. This research aimed to design and evaluate an innovative kit, focusing on the boom-chick fingerstyle technique for novice guitar players. The objectives were threefold: (1) to develop a practice kit tailored to the boom-chick technique; (2) to assess the improvement in learners’ performance before and after using the kit; and (3) to evaluate learners’ satisfaction amongst 10 undergraduate music majors volunteered to participate in the study. The instructional kit accompanyed by the guitar skill assessment tool underwent validation by 3 experts using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC), with all items achieving scores greater than 0.50, indicating strong content validity. Research findings showed that the median score (interquartile range) for the boom-chick technique prior to training was 3.00 (3.00, 3.00), while post-training scores significantly increased to 7.50 (7.00, 8.00), with statistical significance (P = 0.003). Furthermore, participants reported the highest level of satisfaction with the practice kit. The findings suggest that the boom-chick guitar practice kit is both effective and well-received, demonstrating its potential to support the development of essential fingerstyle guitar techniques amongst beginners. As such, the innovation may serve as a valuable resource in guitar instruction and broader music education settings.
