In recent years, the population of Chinese as a second language (CSL) learners has continued to expand. Consequently, improving the quality of Chinese language education has become a key priority in the field of international Chinese language education. Students’ learning engagement serves as a crucial indicator for measuring educational quality, as learners’ willingness and level of engagement profoundly influence their Chinese language acquisition outcomes. Against this backdrop, there is a clear need for empirical research on the engagement of CSL learners. This study adopts a quantitative research approach, initially surveying 120 Thai university students as the target population, and after data screening, obtains 98 valid samples. Using SPSS 27.0, the collected data are analyzed through descriptive analysis, independent samples t-tests, and one-way ANOVA to respectively examine the characteristics of students’ Chinese learning engagement and the relationship between individual differences and their engagement. The results show that Thai university students demonstrate a generally high level of engagement in Chinese learning, with no significant differences observed in engagement based on gender, length of Chinese learning time, or age. Individual difference factors do not affect the distribution patterns of engagement across different dimensions among Thai university students. Based on these findings, international Chinese language teachers can adopt general strategies such as enriching classroom interaction formats, increasing authentic language use tasks, and fostering a supportive learning environment to further consolidate and enhance students’ behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement, thereby continuously optimizing the effectiveness of CSL instruction.
