บทคัดย่อ
ในแวดวงวิชาการ เมืองถูกกำหนดนิยามไว้ในหลายลักษณะด้วยกัน ขึ้นอยู่กับเงื่อนไขทางสังคม ประวัติศาสตร์ รวมทั้งอำนาจของวาทกรรมที่ครอบงำพื้นที่และเวลาที่เมืองถูกหยิบยกขึ้นมาให้คำนิยาม
บทความนี้ต้องการชี้ให้เห็นว่า คำนิยามของเมืองทั้งหลายที่ปรากฏอยู่ในเอกสารทางวิชาการต่างๆ ในท้ายที่สุดก็เป็นเพียง “ภาพตัวแทน”ของเมืองหรือเมืองในฐานะมโนทัศน์ที่ถูกเสกสรรปั้นแต่งขึ้นมาตามกรอบการมองอันจำเพาะที่โยงใยอยู่กับอำนาจ – ความรู้ที่ครอบงำวงวิชาการในขณะนั้นอยู่ อย่างไรก็ดีเมืองก็มิได้เป็นเพียงสิ่งที่ดำรงอยู่เฉพาะในฐานะภาพตัวแทน นอกเหนือจากการตั้งดำรงอยู่ในอาณาบริเวณของภาษาหรือความคิดแล้ว เมืองยังต้องตั้งดำรงอยู่ในมิติทางกายภาพด้วย การทำความเข้าใจและแก้ไขปัญหาต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นในสังคมเมืองย่อมไม่อาจจะดำเนินไปได้แค่ในมิติของมโนทัศน์ ซึ่งนี่คือประเด็นที่เราไม่ควรมองข้าม
