บทคัดย่อ
บทความชิ้นนี้ สำรวจพัฒนาการทางความคิดเกี่ยวกับชาติพันธุ์ (ethnicity) ของชาร์ลส์ เอฟ คายส์ ในฐานะเครื่องมือทางความคิดในการเข้าใจความแตกต่างอันซับซ้อนของกลุ่มชน ผู้เขียนเสนอว่า คุณูปการที่สำคัญของคายส์ ไม่ได้อยู่ที่การพัฒนามโนทัศน์ดังกล่าวให้คมชัดหรือมีพลานุภาพในการอธิบายสังคมแต่อย่างใดหากแต่อยู่ที่การทำให้มโนทัศน์ดังกล่าว เต็มไปด้วยความกำกวม อิหลักอิเหลื่อและไม่ลงรอย พร้อมทั้งเปิดมิติความสัมพันธ์ที่เต็มไปด้วยปัญหาระหว่าง อัตลักษณ์วัฒนธรรม และรัฐชาติ ในขณะที่ความสนใจของคายส์ต่อกระบวนการก่อรูปของความหมายของอัตลักษณ์ทางชาติพันธุ์ได้รับอิทธิพลโดยตรงจาก เวเบอร์ เกียร์ตซ์ลีช และบูร์ดิเยอ การเชื่อมโยงระหว่างเทคโนโลยีเชิงอำนาจ วิทยาศาสตร์ และชาติพันธุ์ ของคายส์ในยุคหลัง ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากฟูโกต์ ที่ช่วยในการเปิดเผยให้เห็นถึงตรรกะของการจัดแบ่งกลุ่มทางชาติพันธุ์ของรัฐชาติ ตลอดจนสืบสาววงศ์วานว่านเครือของความเป็นชาติพันธุ์ในยุคสมัยของรัฐชาติสมัยใหม่ ในท่ามกลางความอิหลักอิเหลื่อของมโนทัศน์ชาติพันธุ์ มโนทัศน์ดังกล่าวยังคงเป็นฐานความคิดสำคัญของคายส์ในการเข้าใจพลวัตการเปลี่ยนแปลงสังคม บทความลงท้ายด้วยการวิเคราะห์ข้อจำกัดมโนทัศน์ชาติพันธุ์ อันยังคงเป็นเรื่องที่ท้าทายนักศึกษาทางด้านชาติพันธุ์ร่วมสมัยในปัจจุบัน
